Lee Ufan has been a huge influence on my work for quite a while. Korean born and raised in Japan, Lee Ufan is one of the great minimalist painters and sculptors of the 20th century.
I was doing a video interview with Lee at the DMA. After we were done, Mr Ufan was talking about this painting and became very animated. This is a piece that deals with the idea of time and infinity. The blue squares are made by the same brush blotting the canvas until the ink has gone then re-dipped. You see time passing and repeating.
Ufan did this piece quite a while ago and hadn’t seen it in a while. He had never intended to sell it and it wound up in Dallas either way.
Anyway as he was talking I started snapping away with my camera.
